Winter time means Winterizing time!

Don't let this happen!

If you own a fountain or birdbath, it’s time to winterize! Why winterize? To prevent water from freezing in them, causing them to crack and remove any finish they may have on them.

Extreme and rapid changes in temperature and humidity adversely affect concrete products because concrete has an inherent tendency to expand and contract with climatic conditions. For this reason, our concrete fountains were manufactured with a mixture that contains fiber and mechanical additives that enhance the elastic qualities of the concrete. This does not mean, however, that they are resistant to cracking. It just means you have to take the necessary steps towards prevention. Here are some simple rules to follow to prevent your fountain from cracking:

1. Remove the rubber stopper from the largest bowl (tap out using a hammer and screwdriver);
2. Drain all the water from each bowl thoroughly;
3. Remove the pump and store inside for the winter;
4. Place a fountain cover* over the entire fountain and secure; and
5. Check the cover throughout the winter (especially after heavy winds) to make sure it is still secure.

*We have fountain covers available for purchase ranging in size from small at $29 to extra large at $129. It is imperative that you make sure to remove all water from the pump housing and bowls prior to covering.

To winterize your birdbath, drain all the water from the bowl, and turn the bowl upside down or lean vertically against the pedestal (to prevent water from getting in the bowl and freezing).

If water has already frozen in your fountain or birdbath, then purchase RV antifreeze (pink in color and safe for the environment) and pour into all bowls. The ice will turn into a slushy mix, so you can finish the winterizing process.
